The library dates to 1933, when a committee looking for an appropriate location to memorialise Marx found a building with a suitably radical history. Over the years it had been home to John Stuart Mill's London Patriotic Club, William Morris's radical publishing house Twentieth Century Press, and Iskra, the Russian revolutionary newspaper, which Lenin wrote and edited in the building.
