Saffron Hill featured in Charles Dickens’s Oliver Twist as the location of Fagin’s den. Dickens was a strong advocate for the poor and working-class families, and sought to challenge the Victorian idea that poverty was caused by moral failings. The Dickens Museum is at 48 Doughty Street.
