This ancient well, rediscovered in 1924, is visible through a window at 16 Farringdon Lane. It’s the original ‘Clerks’ well’ that gave Clerkenwell its name, supposedly because clerks performed a mystery play nearby – in 1301 the prioress of St Mary’s Nunnery complained about visiting Londoners trampling on her hedges.
