A Carthusian monastery, then the Duke of Norfolk’s lavish mansion, the Charterhouse was purchased in 1611 for the establishment of an almshouse, and a school for 40 boys from poor backgrounds. The community of 'Brothers' established by the almshouse is still here today. Visitors can take a fascinating guided tour, or visit the establishment’s beautiful chapel and museum free of charge.
