In 1816, followers of Thomas Spence, a radical egalitarian from Newcastle, organised mass meetings on Spa Fields. It was much larger open space at that time, and the meetings attracted thousands. Police violently dispersed the meeting and leaders were charged with high treason, though the case eventually collapsed.
