The current building dates from 1866, although a meat market has operated here since medieval times, when Smithfield – then ‘Smoothfield’ – was a site of public entertainment and grisly executions. A memorial commemorates Wat Tyler, leader of the Peasants' Revolt, who was fatally stabbed during negotiations with the king in 1381.
